Your Company Shouldn't Need You for Everything

Founders and CEOs often become the people everyone turns to.

They make the difficult decisions.

They solve the problems nobody else knows how to solve.

They carry important relationships.

They know why certain things are done a certain way.

They have years of experience that nobody else has.

At first, that feels like leadership.

Over time, it can become dependency.

The Dependency Test

Ask yourself:

  • How many decisions still require my approval?

  • How many problems come back to me?

  • Who do people go to when they don't know what to do?

  • How much important knowledge exists only in my experience?

  • Who could lead in my absence?

  • Who could teach others what I know?

The answers tell you something important.

Your organization may have talented people, but talent alone doesn't eliminate dependency.

You need leadership capacity.

The Goal Isn't to Step Away Tomorrow

Reducing founder and CEO dependency doesn't mean disappearing.

It means deliberately building people who can carry more responsibility.

That starts by looking inside your organization.

Who already has the trust of your people?

Who consistently gets results?

Who helps others solve problems?

Who naturally brings people together?

Who do people listen to?

Those people may already be demonstrating the leadership your organization needs.

You don't necessarily need to bring in an outside expert to tell your organization what good leadership looks like.

You may already have evidence of it.

Start With One Question

Choose one area of the business that depends heavily on you.

Then ask:

Who inside this organization could eventually own this?

Don't worry yet about whether they're ready.

Start by identifying the people who could grow into the responsibility.

That is where sustainable leadership development begins.

At Holistic Leadership Solutions, we believe leadership development should reduce dependency, not create another dependency on an outside program.

Leadership Development: Built Together, Owned by You.

A Question to Consider

If you were no longer available to solve the problems your organization brings you today, who would step forward?

That person may be closer than you think.
